What is Canine Distemper?

Running a rescue, we’ve encountered a few cases of canine distemper. I was told by many vets that even if a dog survives the virus, they may become “healthy porters” transmitting the disease in their urine, saliva, and feces for the rest of their lives. I fail to find this information in any article I’ve read on distemper. Anyone have any suggestions?

@jessica: Thanks for sharing this info. I’ve found an article with more information about canine distemper. They agree with you, but they say it is only infectious during the first two months after recovery.
See below:

How long is a recovered dog contagious?

A recovered dog may shed virus up to 2 to 3 months. It is important to keep this in mind when taking a recovered pet anywhere where other dogs are present. The most intense viral shedding occurs in the first 2 weeks of infection.
